Sixteen (16) detainees held at the Tetuan Police Station escaped by sawing off the steel bars of their detention cell during the height of a downpour at dawn yesterday.

As of presstime, thirteen detainees have been recaptured by authorities after an ultimatum issued by Zamboanga Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar to round up the escapees within 24 hours.

PNP Sr. Inspector Shellamie Chang said that the escapees used a steel saw to cut the bars of the detention cell door.

Two guards who were standing outside the police station were surprised to see a group of detainees passing by the front entrance past 3 a.m.

One of the policemen fired a warning shot which caused the detainees to scamper off in different directions.

An escapee, who remains unidentified, was said to have been met by a motorcycle with two men, one of who handed the former a pistol before they left the place.

City Police Director Sr. Neri Vincent Ignacio immediately proceeded to the Tetuan Police Station to personally spearhead manhunt operations.

Security was tight in barangays surrounding the Tetuan Police Station as police recaptured the detainees during the succeeding hours.

This includes William Parajado, the alleged mastermind, who was caught in barangay Camino Nuevo together with another detainee, Junie Boy Rodriguez.

One of the escapees, Arkham Ignacio, was brought to the police station after his surrender to a city councilor.

Chang identiifed the escapees as Nadzmar Hack, Rio De Asis, Arkham Ignacio, Adzmir Ibrahim, William Pajarado, Lexandrus Manog, Junie Roy Rodriguez, Oscar Baginda, Roger Mark V Ragasa, Haibil Samdain,  Al-Fermin Saddang, Emmanuel Matulac, Adzri Juhuri, Jezree Salazar, Sulayman Sali and Chuck Lawrence Tarangda.

Majority of the detainees are facing charges related to illegal drugs.

As of presstime, only Hack, Ibrahim and Sali were at large.

Meanwhile, Ignacio said that duty policemen and officials at the Tetuan Police Station  face possible relief.

The detention cell had been holding more than 60 detainees prior to the escape.  The cell has a capacity of 15 to 20 persons.  (Dan Toribio)
