The Philippine Navy turned over the 27,000 sacks of rice to the Bureau of Customs yesterday during the start of investigation on the alleged smuggling activity.

Bureau of Customs Zamboanga District Collector Atty. Lyceo Martinez said that they will conduct an investigation on allegations by crew members that the motor vessel encountered engine trouble in the seas off Olutanga Island.

The results of the investigation will be forwarded to the agency’s legal department for appropriate action.

The Bureau of Immigration was also present to document  the crew members on board the vessel while quarantine officials were concerned with determining the well-being and the presence of diseases from crew of the vessel.

It will be recalled that the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NAVFORWEM) intercepted a foreign vessel loaded with 27,180 sacks of smuggled rice worth P67-million and 51 undocumented passengers along the coast of Olutanga Island last Saturday night.  (Remus Ong)
