Senator Cynthia Villar, together with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), have distributed 15 decorticating machines to coconut farmers in Mindanao Thursday at the PCA Zamboanga Research Institute located at San Ramon this city.

According to Villar, the 15 machines cost P7.5 million and were distributed to three farmers from each of the five regions.

The recipients came from regions 4-A,  11, 12, 13, and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Decorticating is a popular method where the whole husk is fed in a cylinder and crushed to separate the fiber and dust. The fiber will be twined and made into various products while the dust will be used as organic fertilizer.

The decorticating machine was developed by the PCA Zamboanga Research Center. Some products which can be produced by the machine are bags, mats, color blinds, eco bags, and others

“This is part of the shared facility program of the government. If you are a cooperative, organization of farmers, and local government unit you are entitled to the shared facility program,” Villiar said.

Present during the activity were PCA Administrator Romulo De La Rosa, councilor Lilibeth Nuño, former congresswomen Lilia Nuño, and other guests. (R.G. A A. Go)
