Newly appointed Zamboanga District Collector Atty. Lyceo Martinez and military officials met last week to discuss solutions to the smuggling menace.

Martinez said that importers should learn to pay importation tax to the Bureau of Customs or risk having their cargoes confiscated.

Martinez met with Joint Task Force Sulu Commander Brig Gen. Cirilito Sobejana and Naval Forces Western Mindanao Commander Rear Admiral Rene Medina to discuss measures to curb smuggling.

Martinez said that both officials vowed to help the BOC in its anti-smuggling campaign.

The Zamboanga District Collector also met with rice importers in the region.

“I appealed to them to help BOC by paying the corresponding importation taxes,”  said Martinez.

The Bureau of Customs Zamboanga District Office has reported a deficit of P36-million for the first quarter of this year.  (Ely Dumaboc)
