Senator Cynthia Villar expressed optimism  that the Coconut Industry Development Fund intended for  coconut farmers will pass before July this year.

According to Villar, the Senate and the House of Representatives are scheduled to conduct a bicameral conference by May 15.

“Naipasa na namin sa Senate and House of Representatives. mag ba-Bicam kami, at yung coconut industry development fund bicam report maipadala na sa President para mapirmahan,” Villar said.

The coconut industry development fund includes the coco levy fund which was collected from coconut farmers and invested in San Miguel Corporation as shares.

Of the total coco levy funds, P75-million in cash was invested in treasury bills while P13-billion was invested in properties and assets.

The money is intended to be used for the scholarship of coconut farmers’ children, shared facility program, and farm improvement.

This is the reason why the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) is urging the coconut farmers, workers, and care takers to register with the PCA for the National Coconut Farmer Registry.

Villar is also the chairperson of the committee on agricultural and rural development in the Senate. (R.G. A A. Go)
