The Zamboanga City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZCCCI) yesterday expressed its full support to the reopening of the barter trade in Zamboanga Peninsula and in Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi (BaSulTa).

Cholo Soliven, ZCCCI president and Regional Economic Development chairman disclosed that it is one of the advocacies being pursued by the chamber to once again open the barter trade industry as this would give the marginalized and indigenous group in BaSulTa including Zamboanga the chance to economic progress.

“Masquin nuay el barter trading pero ta continua lang man este pero si ay abri ya con este hace gayot priority con el maga marginalized groups,” Soliven emphasized.

He said no less than President Rodrigo Duterte is very much serious in the opening of barter trading and is about to sign a proclamation order.

“Tiene ya Terms of Reference (TOR) for its revival pero otro este systema ahora hinde igual de antes cay ay implementa con el BaSulTa Barter Trade Development Board to include the Christian sector,” Soliven continued.

In the golden days of barter in Zamboanga City, barter trading was at its peak where so many entrepreneurs flourished and the economy of the city was also at its best.

However, Soliven said, this time around the businessmen should not only focus on the importation aspect but also put their efforts in the exportation outlook.

“Dapat tiene balance of trade. El maga negociante diaton bende tamen producto con el maga nacion igual Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and all other countries in the ASEAN,” Soliven said.

It is also a big challenge on the part of the exporters and manufacturers to present standard and competitive products that are acceptable in other countries.

Soliven said the new market will bring forth better opportunities to improve their goods to the next level.

He said Zamboanga City is known to be the backdoor but with the opening of the barter trading, Zamboanga City will now become the front gate of the ASEAN because the city is strategically located very near these countries.
