The week-long celebration of the Cocowayan Festival in Isabela City culminated with street dancing competition of four clustered barangays on April 25.

Each contingent depicted the life, culture, and history of Isabela City through dance movement, colorful costumes, elaborate props and accessories, showcasing the unique characteristic of the city.

The contingent from the clustered island barangays bagged the championship prize of P200,000.00 cash.

The City Government of Isabela through the leadership of Mayor Al-qaid J. Akbar in partnerships with different stakeholders has conducted series of activities in celebration to its 17th Cityhood Anniversary.

The celebration kicked off on April 20 with a motorcade followed by launching of Cocowayan Village Fair at Isabela City Plaza.

Various activities filled the week-long celebration to include health caravan, hip-hop and dance sport competitions, mural-wall painting competition, a mass wedding, some sports events, inauguration of different infrastructure projects, fire and rescue Olympics, Miss Isabela City pageant and more.

During the anniversary parade, colorful dancers of the four contingents of clustered barangays adorned the main thoroughfares of Isabela City to the Basilan National High School Grandstand for their showdown competition.

Vice Mayor Cherrylyn Santos Akbar expressed her gratitude to all their partners, who helped them in their endeavor in building peaceful and progressive Isabela City.

“I believe that this is the best time for me as the Vice Mayor of the City to express my gratitude to all my fellow public servants who are really helping us in all of our undertakings,” she said.

The vice-mayor also announced that the funds for the construction of new Isabela City gymnasium with an amount of P70 million and the 10 meter expansion of city wharf with an amount of P263 million has already been downloaded ready to kick-off construction anytime.

Meanwhile, in his anniversary message, Mayor Al-qaid Akbar, who has just been discharged from the hospital, thanked the officers and participants from different barangays for their active participation that led to a successful celebration.

“Thank you and congratulations for all the forty-five (45) barangays which participated in this occasion. We know how much hard work and dedication you gave just to make this event a success,” he said.

Isabela City Government with the help of police and military put on top priority the peace and order situation in the city that made Cocowayan Festival 2018 celebrated smoothly and peacefully.

Cocowayan Festival is celebrated every 3rd week of April, in line with the City's founding anniversary. In pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 453, April 25, 2018 is a special non-working Day in Isabela City. (RVC/PIA9-Basilan with reports from Nilda Delos Reyes)
