The 25-kilometer Rio Hondo footbridge whose collapse nearly injured top officials should be removed and replaced, according to First District Congressman Celso Lobregat.

In a news conference called by Lobregat yesterday, the solon said that half a billion pesos is needed to concretize the bridge , based on figures submitted to him by the National Housing Authority (NHA).

The figure however can reach nearly a billion pesos or P897,613,762 to replace the footbridges located in seven Z3R housing sites, specifically in Barangays Mariki, Sitio Hongkong, Vale Vista 1, 2,3 and 4 and Taluksangay.

“We are looking for  a solution to the problem not criticism. The solution is to replace those wooden footbridges with concrete ones.  Where the money should come from? It should be from the NHA itself which implemented such national government project,” Lobregat said.

Congressman Lobregat said that even before the infamous “fall” which he experienced on April 26 together with Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar and Committee Chairman on Housing and Urban Development Rep. Albee Benitez, he was already talking to the solon (Benitez) that the foot bridges be replaced with concrete ones similar to the footbridges in Mariki which were constructed during the time of the later mayor Ma. Clara Lobregat.

The Mariki footbridge still stands up to the present time and is the only structure to remain standing during the conflagration which hit four barangays during the 2013 Zamboanga siege.

“My position is those wooden footbridges have to be replaced. No matter what happens in the upcoming Congressional Hearing on this issue,” stressed Lobregat. (Bhong Simbajon/RMN News )
