The Regional Maritime Unit-9 intercepted a vessel loaded with 10,000 board feet of lumber during seaborne operations off the coast of Panigayan Island last Thursday.

Supt. Jacob G. Macabali, RMU-9 Chief, described the contraband as 10,000 board feet of apitong lumber.

The vessel with the illegal cargo was intercepted at around 9am after monitoring was conducted by RMU-9 personnel on the M/L Rafia.

“Matagal na itong sinusubaybayan ng mga troopers namin. With joint operations involving the Seaborne SAF nahuli din ang M/L Rafia,”  Macabali said.

Upon investigation, vessel owner Ben Saylilla told authorities that he is going to use the lumber to repair his boat.

Saylilla claimed to be transporting drinking water from the mainland to Pilas Island.

Meanwhile, Macabali said that the lumber will be turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).  (Allen Abastillas)
