Three Chinese nationals who have been suspected as drug couriers were held by police in Hadji Muhtamad Municipality in Basilan last Thursday.

Basilan Provincial Police chief  Sr. Supt. Rufino Inot identified the three foreigners as Tsz Kin Tsui, 40; Po wong, 33; and Chun Wai, 32.

Inot said that the three suspects were accosted by authorities while buying gasoline in the island municipality.

Prior to the incident, a police report stated that the three foreigners travelled to Indonesia from Hong Kong on a speedboat.

While traversing Philippine seas on their way back, the boat ran out of gasoline prompting the three to make a stop over at  nearby Hji Muhtamad Municipality to buy fuel.

While the speedboat was docked along the island’s coastline, barangay officials accosted the trio and reported the incident to police.

Police confiscated cash money in different currencies and denominations, two cellular phones and passports and other items from the foreigners.

Police are investigating reports that the three are involved in the illegal drug trade in Basilan province. (Richard Falcatan with reports from Ely Dumaboc)
