Three persons were killed while seven were wounded during military operations to rescue kidnap victims in Sulu province yesterday.

Joint Task Force Sulu Commander Brig. Gen. Cirilito Sobjena said that troops from the 21st Infantry Battalion were conducting an operation to rescue the kidnap victims at Sitio Sangay, Barangay Buhanginan, Patikul municipality yesterday morning when they encountered 70 Abu Sayyaf members under the group of Idang Susukan and Almujer Yadah.

The soldiers engaged the bandits in a firefight while attack helicopters provided close air support.

The bandits dispersed and scampered off in different directions as nearby troops reinforced their comrades.

Bloodstains left by the escaping bandits led to three bodies at the encounter site.  These were identified as a certain Moktar, Julhadi and Surayb.

Several bandits were also believed to have been wounded due to the presence of blood along the bandits’ withdrawal route.

Seven soldiers, meanwhile, were wounded during the firefight.

Sobejana said that military operations will not stop until all kidnap victims are safely rescued and the ASG’s strength is reduced to an insignificant level.  (Ely Dumaboc with reports from Dan Toribio)
