The City Council on its regular session last Tuesday commended the Zamboangueño weightlifting and pencak silat teams after winning medals in various competitions abroad.

Ma. Dessa Alegada Delos Santos, a Zamboangueña weightlifter and a member of the Philippine Weightlifting Team, was commended for bagging one silver and two bronze medals for Snatch and Total in the 58kg. women’s category during the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship 2018 held in Urgench, Uzbekistan from April 23 to 30.

Delos Santos, a resident of Barangay Guiwan, together with her coaches Alvin Delos Santos and Allen Hayfrus Diaz, was commended for showing remarkable achievement during the competition.

The  City Council also commended the 8-man delegation of pencak silat team which participated in the ‘1st Junior World Pencak Silat Championship 2018 held at Songkhla, Thailand from April 24 to 28.

A total of 16 countries joined the competition with participants aged 14 to 17 years old.

Jerome Negapatan and Harold Ralph Ungaya  won silver medals in the men’s doubles.

The men’s regular group, composed of Negapatan, Ungaya and Tyronne Bernardo, all from San Roque National High School, also won in the competition.

The women’s regular group headed by Raven Carandang, Hanna Seins Leaño and Cris Ann Jelyn Magtagad from Zamboanga National High School-West won the bronze medal.  The group’s coaches are Herald Padi, April Joy Alarcon and Beverly Mahusay.

District 1 Councilor Elbert Atilano, Chairman of the Committee on Youth and Sports, said that both teams showed exemplary performance in the international competitions and are thus worthy of praise and admiration.

Meanwhile, the Zamboanga City Archery team was also commended after they bagged 6 medals (4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze) during the 2018 Philippine Archery Cup, leg 2, Visayas leg held at Ormoc Oval, Ormoc Central School, Ormoc City from April 27 to 29.

The gold medalists are Ynjel Mickaella Gimena, Cub Girls category; Atheena Franchesca Palma, Bowman Girls category; and Steve De Sosa with 2 gold medals in the Bare Bow category,

The silver medal in the Cub Boys category was awarded to Dion Cedrick Marquez and John Ross de Sosa in the Cadet Boys category. (Monch L. Follosco)
