Seven ASG force multipliers, including one minor, surrendered to Basilan authorities last Thursday, May 10, in Basilan Province.

The  group was known for their participation in some of the ASG’s terror attacks by providing manpower, firearms and ammunition to the bandits.

The seven (7) surrendered to government troops at Brgy. Tuburan Proper, Hadji Muhammad Adjul, Basilan Province bringing along with them seven (7) firearms including one (1) M16A1 rifle, three (3) M1 Garand Rifles, One (1) M79 Grenade Launcher, One (1) improvised M79 Grenade Launcher and one (1) 5.56 revolver.

The surrender of  seven individuals was a result of the focused and relentless pursuit operations of the troops of JTF Basilan and persistent government initiatives and inter-agency efforts of the AFP with support from the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), the Provincial Government of Basilan and Hadji Muhammad Adjul Municipality.

Fatigue, hunger, loneliness in being away from their families and loved ones, and the fear of being killed when engaging with government forces are the reasons why the men left their lives as bandits.

“We don’t want to die in war just like what happened to  others. We don’t want our families to be clueless on what happened to us. I don’t want to be buried in the middle of the jungle nowhere to be found by my family,” said a surrenderer. Also included was a minor whose name was withheld together with the other six while they are still undergoing custodial debriefing at the headquarters of the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion, SOCOM, Philippine Army.

Brig. Gen. Uy once again reiterated that, “We have won several communities that used to support the Abu Sayyaf bandits. The Abus and lawless elements supporting them are now confined in the hinterlands where they intimidate communities for support.

Meawhile, an Abu Sayyaf sub-leader and four other  members surrendered to military officials in Kalingalan Caluang, Sulu last Thursday.

The ASG surrenderers were identified as Berham Lutian aka Vietnam, an ASG sub-leader and three of his members:  Abdulsalam Ajul aka Rambo, Simal Sali and Alvin Alibasa.

Hours after the surrender, another ASG member identified as Ahmajir Ahmad alias Abu Darda also surrendered to authorities.

The Abu Sayyaf members surrendered with their high-powered firearms to Fleet-Marine troops stationed in Sulu province.  (Richard Falcatan)
