Thousands of voters will go to their polling places today to vote for their choice of leaders in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

President Rodrigo Duterte has declared May 14 as a special non-working day for employees to allow the latter to participate in today’s elections.

Commission on Election (Comelec) records show that a total of 3,676 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) aspirants have filed their Certificates of Candidacy (COC) with the Comelec Zamboanga City district offices.

The Comelec Regional and District offices are reportedly prepared for the conduct of the elections today, based on interviews last week.

Candidates put all their efforts in wooing their constituents during the last day of campaign last Saturday.

Last week, the Comelec held an orientation for the Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) who will be serving in districts 1 and 2.

Teachers have started receiving ballot boxes and election paraphernalia last Saturday at the Tetuan Coliseum.

Atty. Roy Cañete, District 1 Election Officer, said that no election hotspots were identified in Zamboanga city.

The security sector is however monitoring the situation in island barangays where teachers were reported to have been under threat.

COMELEC is constantly reminding all the candidates to abide with the regulations stipulated in the Omnibus Election Code to avoid disqualifications.

This after a reminder from First District Congressman Celso Lobregat about some monitored incidents of vote buying by some candidates.  (L. Jocson)
