Twelve (12) persons, including the brother of an Abu Sayyaf leader,  were  killed while fourteen (14) others were wounded during intense fighting  between government troops and the Abu Sayyaf group in Patikul, Sulu  last Sunday.

A military report said that personnel from the 5th Scout Ranger Battalion  were conducting search and rescue operations for remaining kidnap  victims at Sitio Kan Alas, Barangay Tanum in Patikul at 6:15am when they encountered four Abu Sayyaf sub-leaders and their followers.

The four Abu Sayyaf sub-leaders who were present during the encounter  were Hadan Sawadjaan, Idang Susukan, Injam Yadah and Ben Tattoh.

An hour-long firefight ensued until the Abu Sayyaf decided to withdraw.

Ten ASG members were killed but only four were positively identified:  Taha Sawadjaan (brother of Hatib Sawadjaan), Amah Talah, a certain Red and Long Abraham.

Two soldiers were also killed in the encounter.

Meanwhile, twelve soldiers and two Abu Sayyaf members were injured in the gun battle.

The wounded Abu Sayyaf members were identified as Ben Quirino aka Ben Tattoo and Adzren Sawadjaan.

Troops recovered one M653 Armalite, several rounds of ammunition and bomb components from the encounter site.

Joint Task Force Sulu Commander Brig. General Cirilito Sobejana vowed to sustain the government’s efforts to rescue all the remaining kidnap victims in the hands of the Abu Sayyaf.  (Ely Dumaboc)
