The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has reported a low voter turnout during the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections last May 14.

Zamboanga City District 1 Election Officer Atty. Stephen Roy Cañete said that 47.35 percent of voters voted in District 1 while 67.09 percent voted in District 2.

This translates to a an average voter turnout of 57% for both districts.

For district 1, only 107,040 regular voters voted in the barangay and 46, 303 voters for the Sangguniang Kabataan.

For district 2, a total of 141,014 persons voted in the barangay level while 41,312 young people voted in the SK elections.

Cañete said that the voting result was not much different from the previous election where voter turnout was from 50 to 60 percent.

“Maskin cosa pa kita move ase, hende se omenta el voting turnout si mismo el hente hende anda vota,” Cañete said.

He said that the Comelec focuses on registration and it would only be up to the people to go to the polling centers to vote on their particular choice of candidate. (RGAAGo)
