UngkayaPukan, Basilan – Three Abu Sayyaf members who were reportedly afraid to die or be betrayed by relatives surrendered to military forces in Basilan earlier this week.

The bandits, who were identified  to be followers of ASG leader FurujiIndama, turned over 3 M16 rifles with several rounds of ammunition at the headquarters of the 18th Infantry Battalion in Basilan.

The three were involved in clashes against the government forces in Barangay Magcawa and Barangay Baguindan in previous years, which resulted to destruction of properties and casualties.

The youngest among the surrenderees, HudzriHaron, had been a rubber tapper before he joined the ASG. He economically struggled until he joined the group because of the promise of financial support. He was later blackmailed that he was already in the government wanted list.

RadzmierMundoArangli @ Inang, was lured to join the group after being enticed with money and a firearm. Despite the absence of the promised financial incentive, he developed an absurd affinity with the ASG.

JirhamJalil was prompted to join the organization when he was lured with drugs. He revealed that the terrorist group also uses illegal drugs to recruit youngsters.

The coordinated effort of the unit with the Local Government Units in delivering a message for peace and reconciliation on the ground also served the pivotal role to convince Abu Sayyaf bandits to take on a positive alternative for their future.  (Richard Falcatan)
