Lawmakers are asking the National Housing Authority (NHA) to include the installation of electrical and water facilities as part of the construction of government housing projects to prevent fixers from preying on beneficiaries of the units.

The recommendation was made during yesterday’s 2nd hearing on the Zamboanga City Roadmap to Recovery and Reconstruction (Z3R) at the House of Representatives.

During the hearing, NHA officials revealed that the construction of housing units does not include the installation of electric and water faciltiies.

Committee members said that this should form part of the committee recommendations to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to prevent further problems to housing beneficiaries, some of who are victims of calamities and disasters.

During the hearing, it was learned that the separate installation of electricity and water lines burdened the beneficiaries, most of who do not have the capability to work on having their utilities installed.

The beneficiaries are forced to resort to using and paying so-called fixers to be able to install utilities in their units.

Congressman Albee Benitez, Committee on Housing and Urban Development Chairman, said that the third committee hearing will be scheduled in July.  (RGAAGo)
