Council commends Zambo athletes in Philippine National Games 2018 Print

The City Council on its regular session last Tuesday commended the strong athletic delegation of Zamboanga City for bagging 45 medals in the recently concluded Philippine National Games 2018 held in Cebu City on May 19-25, this year.

A total of 19 gold medals were bagged in the different events, which include two gold medals in archery won by Jefferson Sienes, Compound Men Junior category and Steve De Sosa in the Team men category; two gold medals in Judo won by Dennis Catipon and Alvin Mendoza. Sharief Afif won a gold medal in the 84 kg. senior category in the karatedo while in Swimming 4x50m Freestyle relay headed by Glenn Arsula won a gold medal.

The strong contingent of the weightlifting team accumulated a total of 13 gold medals won by the Zamboanga City delegation led by Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz. These include in the 58 kgs. Open Division where Hydilyn Diaz was adjudged as the ‘Outstanding Athlete in Women Open Division; Mary Flor Diaz, 48 kgs. Open Division; Baby Jane Boton, 48 kgs. Youth Division; Rowel Garcia, 56 kgs. Open Division; Jane Linete Hipolito, 58 kgs. Youth Division and was adjudged as ‘Outstanding Athlete in Women Youth Division.’

In the higher categories, Nestor Colonia won a gold medal in the 62 kgs. Open Division and was adjudged as the ‘Outstanding Athlete in Men Open Division’ followed by Jeffrey Garcia in the 69 kgs. Open Division;  Eduardo Diaz brother of Hidilyn won a gold medal in the 69 kgs. Junior Division; Margaret Colonia, 69 kgs. Open Division; Kristel Macrohon, 75 kgs. Open Division; Maybelyn Pablo; 90 kgs. Open Division and Clyde Kent Enriquez won a gold medal in the 105 kgs. Open Division category.

The Zamboanga City delegation in the weightlifting team was declared champions in the Men and Women Open Division, Girls Youth Division and the Men and Women Junior Division.

The silver medalists are Dennis Francisco in the Light Weight Division, arnis; Linggala Wedimar, Team Men Open Recurve, archery; Hannah Mae Angeles, karatedo; while in the weightlifting event include Ma. Dessa delos Santos, Eduardo Diaz, Adrian Edao and Joe Patrick Diaz.

The bronze medalists are Deinnis Francisco, Gelie Gail Amil, Hannah Faith Tumawis and Jhn Frstly Talosig in arnis event; Linggala Wedimar, Bryan Christian Alpapara, and Dominic Aaron Bibon, archery; Michael Angelo Arcillas, Rosmil Samson and Romer Dagoy, boxing; Abdul Raffy Antao and Jeremiah Sarabia, karatedo; Kevin Dela Cruz, Alkimar Insik, Lemon Denmark Tarro, Essie Jane Isnani and John Austine Bucoy, weiiightlifting; while Glenn Arsula won two medals in swimming in 50-m butterfly and 100m freestyle categories.

The head of delegation include City Sports Development Officer Dr. Cecilia Chavez-Atilano, Jonathan De Sosa, assistant Delegation Athletic Manager and Nico Campomanes as Delegation Recorder.

District 1 Councilor Elbert Atilano, Chairman of the Committee on Youth and Sports, who was the principal author of the Councils’ resolution, said this is another feather added to the Zamboanga City delegation in the Philippine National Games officially known as the POC-PSC Games as a national multi-sport tournament organized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for Filipinos ages 16 years old and above.

“We are very much elated that our Zamboanga Athletic Delegation has once again gave our city pride and honor for performing their best and excelling in the Philippine National Games 2018. For our part, we need to find ways and means on how we can provide more help and support to our deserving athletes,” Councilor Atilano told reporters in an interview. (Monch L. Follosco)
