Zamboanga City Medical Center Chief of Hospitals Dr. Romeo Ong thanked Mayor Celso Lobregat and the City Government of Zamboanga for the support extended to the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC).

In a message during the turnover of the P2.3 million rehabilitated and improved senior citizens ward at the ZCMC Monday afternoon, Dr. Ong revealed that when Mayor Lobregat was still the city’s lone representative in the House of Congress, the latter worked hard to secure $9.1M worth of medical equipment from the national government.

The mayor led the unveiling of the city-government funded project to enhance the delivery of services to ailing senior citizens who avail of the services at the facility. The ward is maintained by the City Government through the City Health Office. The inauguration formed part of the ZCMC’s celebration of its 93rd anniversary.

As he turned over the significant project, Mayor Lobregat likewise committed to renovate, rehabilitate and expand the center’s Infectious Diseases Department.
The Zamboanga City Medical Center (erstwhile the Zamboanga General Hospital) has grown. When it was established on September 1, 1918, it was only a compound with one boarding house for nursing students, a one-building classroom and a tennis court.

“Today, there are more buildings than there are open areas, more highly-specialized doctors, more well-trained nurses, more beds for our increasing number of patients, more modern medical equipment, and more money for day-to-day administrative and operational needs,” he shared.

The hospital now also boasts of the latest medical equipment. “We now have the most hospital equipment that we need to provide proper health care to Zamboanga’s constituents, whether they are rich or poor. This simply means that we are not lagging behind other hospitals in terms of equipment, personnel and advancement and management,” Dr. Ong added.

Despite the changes and improvements, Dr. Ong assured the Zamboangueno people of the ZCMC community’s commitment to its mission and vision: to provide proper health care to the people of Zamboanga as well as to continuously upgrade its facilities and train personnel to promote excellent health care delivery.

“As the government is launching the Pankalusugang Pangkalahatan (universal healthcare), this hospital will again be at the forefront offering our services and expertise to the poorest of the poor in this part of the country,” he said. “Our predecessors dedicated their lives to the services of our people. As their successors, we pledge to remain steadfast to their visions, hope and dreams of the ZCMC dedicated to humanity and medical advancement so we may be able to provide better healthcare and a brighter future for generations to come.” — Claudine Uniana/City Hall PIO
