The x-ray machine which is used to check passengers’ baggage at the Zamboanga seaport has broken anew, according to a Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) official.

“Bago lang ito ininstall last year at bago pa ito, under warranty period,” said PPA Manager Liberto C. Dela Rosa.

Dela Rosa attributed the break down to overuse of the equipment to check the baggage of thousands of passengers who regularly use the port terminal.

The number of passengers ranges from 4,000 to 5,000 a day.  The equipment is used to check baggage from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday.

The break down was also attributed to power outages and fluctuations which regularly occur in the city.

Dela Rosa said that the machine has no alternative once it overheats.  He explained that there is another one within the vicinity but it is used in another terminal to service passengers bound for Malaysia.

Dela Rosa said that they might face difficulty in obtaining the spare parts since they have to order from Duhor, Malaysia.  (Allen Abastillas)
