More than 45 families have fled their homes to escape fighting between government troops and communist insurgents in Dumingag municipality, Zamboanga del sur last Friday.

PNP Chief Insp. Andrew Limod, Dumingag Police chief, said that the fighting started when members of the New People’s Army attempted to burn construction equipment in the area.

Members of the 53rd Army Infantry Battalion prevented the incident after responding to information provided by residents.

Fighting intensified later this week when communist rebels engaged government troops.

Military airstrikes prompted the evacuation of at least 200 residents, who have sought shelter at a covered court in Barangay Saad.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Social Welfare and Development office has provided food and other necessities to the affected families.  (Ely Dumaboc)
