Isabela Mayor Al-Qaid Akbar ordered the closure of an open dumpsite at Sitio Lantung, Tabiawan in line with a national law declaring all open dumpsites nationwide illegal.

The law, RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, declares open dumpsites all over the country illegal since the year 2006.

Karen Tandag, DENR-EMB Solid Waste Management Section Chief, visited Isabela City to personally check on the closure of the dumpsite.

The DENR  turned over a P16,000 check to the Isabela City Government for the mobilization of the Informal Waste Sector or the “Eco-boys,”  former scavengers who were given work to help in the clean-up.

The DENR will also provide the amount of P300,000 as financial grant to assist the city in converting the former dumpsite into a fully-integrated ecological park which includes an operational material recovery facility, a mulching area, recycling center, compost pits and other facilities and equipment.

Isabela City will conduct a planning and programming workshop on the establishment of the ecopark and barangay level waste segregation, collection and transport system from July 5 to 9.

Mayor Akbar is appealing to all sectors to join the city government in this endeavor.

“With everybody’s help, we will be one step closer to building a cleaner and greener Isabela City that our children and our children’s children will surely enjoy.  (Richard Falcatan)
