House of Representatives Committee Chairman of Appropriations  Davao Congressman Karlo Alexei Nograles on Monday assured that Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College (ZCSPC) will soon be a university by virtue of the House Bill 3929 or the Bill converting Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College into a university. Once approved, the Polytechnic College shall be known as Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University(ZPPSU).

According to Nograles, he received a recent information that the Senate Committee on Higher Education chaired by Senator Chiz Escudero is very supportive in passing House Bill 3929 in the Upper House at the soonest possible time, and even without any amendment, as filed by District II Congressman Celso  L. Lobregat.

Congressman Nograles said that the passage of this bill into law is very important for Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University in order for the school to obtain more substantial funds for its operation.

"We in the Committee on Appropriations are going to make sure that this new university in Zamboanga will be funded in accordance with the law to catch up with the growing demand of tertiary education here in Western Mindanao," Nograles said.

Nograles personally visited on Monday ZCSPC College campus to have an ocular inspection of its existing facilities and to interact with the students.

He said that the population of ZCSPC has now doubled as reported to him by the college president Dr. Nelson Cabral, compared to that of last school year, due to the start of the Free Higher Education.

"Based on what I have seen, it will be difficult for ZCSPC to accommodate the growing enrollees and so they need to upgrade everything. Hence, they must become a university now so that they can catch up with the demand. And that is what we are working together with Cong. Lobregat here," Nograles stressed.

Nograles instructed ZCSPC President Dr. Nelson Cabral to closely coordinate with Congressman Lobregat and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) officials to expedite the completion of necessary requirements for its college conversion into a university. - Bhong Simbajon/RMN News
