The City Council passed on third and final reading the city’s Public School Teacher’s Scholarship Ordinance last Tuesday during its regular session.

District I Councilor Rodolfo Lim, who is the principal author of the ordinance, thanked his colleagues and those who participated during the public hearing for their support of the legislative measure.

The ordinance will provide the teachers the chance to earn their Masteral and Doctoral degrees, which is costly, for free. This will also encourage them to pursue higher degrees as public school teachers.

The approved ordinance will now be submitted to Mayor Beng Climaco for approval.

In the ordinance, teachers who are teaching in public schools for grade school, high school, and college are eligible to avail the program provided they hold a permanent status.

As a start, the program will begin with 30 scholars per year, 10 for elementary, 10 for high school, and 10 for college. They will be enrolled in government universities with a grant of P20,000 per school year for tuition, books, and thesis writing at P10,000 per semester for two years.

P4 million will be initially allocated for the scholarship by the city government.

The scholar shall also serve the city government two years for every year of scholarship studies. (R.G. A A. Go)
