Eight (8) soldiers were wounded when a bomb exploded during clearing operations at an encounter site in Barangay Bangkal, Patikul, Sulu last Saturday.

Brig. Gen. Divino Rey Pabayo, Joint Task Force Sulu commander, said that the soldiers were confined at the Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital in Barangay Busbus, Jolo Municipality in Sulu Province.

Soldiers of the 1st Scout Ranger Battalion were conducting focused military operations in Barangay Bangkal when they encountered around forty (40) Abu Sayyaf (ASG) members under ASG sub-leaders Almujer Yaddah, Sonny Boy Sajirin, and Ellam Hasirin.

A  fierce gunbattle which lasted for thirty (30) minutes ensued between the soldiers and the bandits.

“We have intensified our operations to pursue the fleeing bandits to prevent them from committing atrocities against the people," said Pabayo.

Lt. Gen. Arnel Dela Vega, Western Mindanao Command commander said that the Joint Task Force Sulu continues to exhaust all efforts and means to contain the Abu Sayyaf and constrict its movement.

“We are continuously intensifying the conduct of focused military operations, in coordination with the local government and the people of Sulu, to neutralize the terrorist group," said Dela Vega.  (Ely Dumaboc)
