The Department of Agriculture-9 (Da-9) is now giving free high valued Cacao seedlings to farmers in the entire Zamboanga Peninsula.

Albert Cuadra, High Value Commercial Development Program Report Officer, has disclosed that the Cacao seedlings that they are providing to farmers, once grown and have reached to 18 months will surely deliver fruits as long as it is well attended and nourished with organic fertilizers.

According to Cuadra, the assistance of high value free Cacao seedlings to farmers  is the program of the Department of Agriculture being implemented nationwide in a a bid to uplift the livelihood of the farmers because there is a shortage of supply of Cacao beans in the world market. “Bien in demand kasi el Cacao na world market maskin el tableya na local market. Bien grande gad se ayuda na mga farmers el Cacao,” Cuadra said.

Cuadra urges farmers to register to farmers’ association or organization in each province, municipality or city where they are based so that they can easily avail the free projects and programs of the DA. Cuadra reiterated that once the cacao are already bearing fruits farmers are given free choice where to sell their Cacao produce.

One of the biggest and top buyers of Cacao beans nationwide is the Kennemer Foods International based in Davao City. Kennemer is in contact with the Department of Agriculture in helping farmers market their cacao beans since the company is the suppliers of dried cacao beans to the leading chocolate company, Mars, based in the United States.
