A barangay kagawad was gunned down by an unidentified assassin along a busy street in Barangay Sta Catalina yesterday morning.

The gun attack was said to have been the second for Michael Magallanes y Tinaytina, 38-years-old, a first- termer barangay kagawad of Sta. Catalina.

Despite having victimized last year however, police remained mum about the possible motive, saying that the incident is still being investigated.

Magallanes was reportedly riding his motorcycle past 7 a.m. when the unidentified assassin struck meters just outside his residence located along Betty 2 Drive.

The victim was heading towards the main road when the suspect appeared and fired at  the former.

Magallanes sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was brought to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police recovered some spent shells of a .45 caliber pistol at the crime scene.

Councilor Jimmy Villaflores, former Sta. Catalina Barangay Captain, said that Magallanes was also shot in the feet near their residence last year.

Villaflores appointed Magallanes to the position of Barangay Treasurer after the latter failed to clinch the kagawad post.

Magallanes was also identified as a former officer of the Rotary Zamboanga West who had no reported negative record.  Residents of Sta. Catalina also described Magallanes as a true public servant who was approachable to the residents.

Zamboanga City Police Station 11 personnel have launched a thorough investigation to identify and arrest the suspect.  (Dan Toribio)
