7 dead due to Leptospirosis Print

At least seven persons in Zamboanga have died after being infected by Leptospirosis from January to June this year, based on health records.

The seven mortalities were among 21 persons infected with the disease for the same period.

DulceMiravite, City Health Officer-in Charge said that patients’ ages range from 19 to60 years old.

Of the seven mortalities, five were male while two were female.  The victims came from the barangays of Sangali, Guiwan, Calarian, Sta. Catalina and Mercedes.

Health records state that seven cases of Leptospirosis have been recorded for the entire year in 2017.

Health officials are still trying to assess the health status considering the increase in the number of cases.

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by Leptospira.  An outbreak usually occurs after a heavy rainfall due to floodwaters in the community.

One can get the disease by being in contact with water contaminated with urine from rodents or rats.

Some of the symptoms of the disease are fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cough and rashes.  (RGAAGo)
