A total of thirty-four (34) families who were left homeless by the 2013 Zamboanga siege will be evicted from the Don Gregorio Evangelista Memorial (Don Gems) School, their temporary home for the past 4 years.

The families are Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) who sought shelter in the school when it was designated as a temporary site for individuals displaced by the 2013 Zamboanga siege.

Mr. Deomedes Cantina, Housing and Land Division Chief, announced the evacuation of the families from the premises due to plans of constructing another school building inside the campus.

Cantina said that the families may transfer to any of four transitory sites designated to house the siege victims.

Cantina asked the families to visit the housing division office for registration prior to being transferred.

The interagency meeting was attended by Sitti Nisa Yusup Fernandez, Don Gems School Principal Juliet Besas, Sta Catalina Barangay Kagawads Banny Alviar and Julieta Fernandez, and representatives from the police and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).  (Remus Ong)
