Thousands of Zamboanga residents celebrated the victory of boxing champ and Senator Manny Pacquiao during a much-awaited match with Argentinian Lucas Matthysse in Malaysia yesterday.

First District Congressman Celso Lobregat congratulated the boxing legend, a former colleague at the House of Representatives, for his victory which made the latter clinch the WBA welterweight title.

Congressman Lobregat, who watched the fight live via pay-per-view with the Zamboangeños at the jampacked ZCSPC gymnasium in Barangay Baliwasan, said that he didn't wonder how Pacquiao knocked down his younger opponent and the defending Argentinian champ after seeing the Filipino champ in good shape.

"Upon seeing Pacquiao enter the ring with his red team stable in full smile and in good shape, I was confident he would make it,and in the 3rd round,he let Mathysse kissed the canvass," Lobregat said.

The 39-year-old Pacquiao improved to 60-7-2 all-time with 39 knockouts in securing his first win since 2016.

In the late stages of the fifth round, Pacquiao dropped Matthysse for the second time of the match.

Pacquiao then ended the bout in the seventh  round when he floored Matthysse again for the TKO win.

The Zamboangeños thanked Congressman Lobregat for sponsoring a free Pay-Per-View (PPV) show using the LED wall. (Dexter Yap)
