The City Council is set to study the creation of additional barangays to allow its leaders to manage their respective areas more efficiently.

Based on discussions during last week’s regular session, the council is looking at the creation of 20 to 30 more barangays.

The council will study the possible division of big barangays such as San Roque, Ayala, Tetuan, Talon-Talon and Tumaga.

Legislative entities such as the Sangguniang Panlungsod have the power to create additional barangays.

The creation of a new barangay in a highly urbanized city will require a population of at least 5,000.

The creation will be subject to an approval by a majority of the votes cast in a plebiscite to be conducted by the Commission on Elections in the local government unit or units directly affected.

Councilor Juan Climaco Elago, author of the resolution, was also tasked to head a special committee to study the proposal.

“It’s time that we increase the number of barangays.  Take into account Manila has 500 barangays.  Zamboanga is three times the size of Manila (but) 98 lang diaton barangay,”  Elago said. (RGAAGO)
