Two Zamboangueños have been appointed as new Commanders of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) during a simple turnover ceremony last Monday.

Southwestern Mindanao District Commander Joseph Coyme took over from former District Commander Ronnie Gil Gavan while Lt. Cmdr. Noriel Ramos, who was appointed as the new Zamboanga Coast Guard Commander, took over from Lt. Cmdr. Alvin Dagalea.

Dagalea and Gavan have been assigned to Cebu City.

Coyme expressed elation over the appointment of two Zamboangueños to handle coastal security.

Coyme said that he instructed Ramos to strengthen security at the port since Zamboanga is considered to be a major port where a constant stream of people and goods are passing by.

Coyme also said that they are strengthening their numbering system to identify motorized pumpboats weighing below 25 tons, some of which are used by lawless elements to commit atrocities at sea.

Meanwhile, the coast guard also aims to intensify their presence in coastal areas due to Zamboanga City’s porous coastline. (Remus Ong)
