Rebel returnee killed in shootout PDF Print E-mail

A rebel returnee, who was involved in a series of atrocities in Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur, was killed during a shootout with police last Sunday afternoon.

Chief Insp. Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office- 9 Information Officer,  identified the slain suspect as Ronel Bation Japay alias Jimboy, an alleged gun-for-hire under former Mayor Stephen Acosta.

Japay was a rebel returnee who had been involved in the June 24 shooting of Luz Yabo Y Tanghap in Monte Alegre, Aurora Municipality, Zamboanga Del Sur.  He was also linked to the ambush of Iligan City Representative, Congressman Belmonte where the suspects were mostly rebel returnees based in Misamis Occidental.

Police said that the suspect engaged in a firefight with the lawmen who were about to arrest him in Barangay Campo Dos in Aurora Municipality.

The operation was conducted by joint operatives of the 902nd Regional Mobile Force Battalion 9, Regional Intelligence Division 9, Provincial Intelligence Branch of Zamboanga Del Sur PPO and Aurora Municipal Police Station at around 4 p.m.

Recovered from Japay’s possession were a .45 caliber pistol with several live ammunition and spent shells and a hand grenade which was found inside the U-box of his motorcycle. (Dan Toribio)
