The Department of Agriculture (DA) held a two-day workshop on climate change in Dipolog City which started last Thursday.

The theme for the workshop is “Mobilizing Science for Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security:  Engaging the Zamboanga Media.”

The objective of the workshop is for the participants to understand climate change, become better communicators in disseminating concepts related to climate change and be active players in the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC).

Topics discussed are the following: Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture and Food Security, Communicating climate change, and climate change stories.

Participants, which include representatives from the media , the academe, government and other sectors, also undertook a field tour.

The speakers during the program are PAJ Director Dr. Rex Navarro; Asian Institute of Journalism Professor Johnny Goloyugo; and former PAJ President Michael Alunan.

Dipolog Mayor Dexter Darel Uy and DA Assistant Regional Director Melba Wee also graced the occasion.

Dr. Navarro stressed the importance of being “smart” in line with climate change:  Weather smart, water smart, energy smart, nutrient and pest smart, carbon smart and knowledge smart.

Melba Wee told participants that Agriculture is dependent on climate change and thus, climate change stories must be disseminated well.

She said that farmers are already affected by climate change.  As a response, the DA now has climate resilient rice seeds, the submarine variety and the drought resistant variety.  (RGAAGo)
