Local officials in the city have appealed for vigilance and cooperation among residents in light of a powerful explosion in Basilan Province which killed ten people yesterday morning.

Zamboanga Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar called an emergency meeting at City Hall with the security sector.

Climaco- Salazar asked authorities to intensify security measures particularly in coastal areas.

The Mayor said that there is no threat as far as the city is concerned but authorities in the area should always maintain a heightened level of security.

Meanwhile, First District Congressman Celso Lobregat is calling on the security sector to stay alert and vigilant amid the present volatile peace and order situation in the region.

“We cannot afford to become collateral damage of the acts of terror being perpetrated by lawless elements in the nearby provinces.  All of us must be extra vigilant to include the civilian populace,”  Lobregat said.

Lobregat also commended the heroism displayed by the members of the Scout Ranger Company and the civilian militiamen who gave their lives in protecting the people.

The officials also extended their condolences to the bereaved families.  (RGAAGo)
