A group of employees from the Department of Education (DepEd), Zamboanga City Schools Division Office, and teachers underwent drug testing  at the Schools Division Office and at the DepEd Human Resources Development Center yesterday.

As of presstime yesterday, more than 100 education department employees have already undergone testing.

Meanwhile, a total of 138 teachers were randomly selected for drug testing.  Of this number only 136 showed up.  One teacher was reportedly admitted at the hospital while another already passed away.

Rosalio B. Conturno, Jr., DepEd Division of Zamboanga Chief Education Supervisor for School Governance and Operations, explained that education officials and personnel under the Schools Division office were required to undergo drug testing.

Teachers will also be randomly selected for drug testing based on an order from the Department of Education in Manila.

A team from DepEd Manila office arrived and coordinated  with the Department of Health to conduct the drug tests.

Meanwhile, Felix Romy Triambulo, Schools Division Superintendent Officer-in-Charge, said that those found out to be positive will undergo confirmatory tests.

He said that a possible sanction for using illegal drugs is termination from service.

DepEd Division of Zamboanga City is composed of Labuan district, Ayala, Sta Maria, Baliwasan, Central, Vitali, Curuan, Manicahan, Mercedes, Putik, Talon Talon, and Tetuan. Zamboanga City Schools Division have almost 8,000 teachers. (RGAAGo)
