Mayor Beng Climaco welcomed yesterday the national Identification (ID) system signed into law by President Duterte even as she mulled the possibility of coming up with enhanced ID cards for residents of Zamboanga City.

“We would like to enhance the capability of the ID system, giving more impetus on the care services of the city government,” Climaco told the press briefing, citing for instance the Makati card, which the Philippine League of Cities had endorsed during its recent 30th founding celebration.

Aside from the security features of the ID system, Climaco said she wants the ID cards to be inclusive or all-encompassing the care services of the city government such as but not limited to health and medical care, allowances and (centennial incentives) for senior citizens, among other services.

“We will review the policy of having the national ID cards enhanced for residents of Zamboanga City,” the mayor said.

President Duterte was expected to sign into law yesterday the bill establishing a single and streamlined ID system in the country.

The national ID law aims to integrate the different government IDs so that cardholders will only present one card for any and all transactions, hoping the system would put an end to red tape, and provide the public with additional protection against terrorism and other security threats.

The card will contain the bearer’s identification system number, full name, sex, blood type, date of birth, place of birth, marital status, address and photo.
