Three bandits were killed and an army soldier was wounded in a gunfight at Barangay Etub-Etub, Sumisip, Basilan yesterday morning.
Western Mindanao Command spokesperson Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang disclosed that government troops recovered the bodies of the slain bandits and their two M16 rifles at the encounter site.

Cabangbang said that soldiers of the 12th Scout Ranger Company and 4th Scout Ranger Battalion clashed with some 20 gunmen who are followers of Abdulbaki Ismanul alias Commander Sahili and Nurrodin Mudalam alias Commander Not.

The encounter lasted 30 minutes after which the gunmen withdrew towards Saluping Island in Tabuan Lasa aboard three pumpboats.

Cabangbang said that one of the soldiers suffered broken limb and was airlifted to Zamboanga City for treatment.

The three bodies remained unidentified as of press time.

Cabangbang said that Ismanul and Mudalam have warrants of arrest.

He added that the group was known to be a supporter of the Abu Sayyaf Group on logistical needs.
