The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has approved the proposed Zamboanga City Waterfront Redevelopment Project for inclusion in the Assistance to Cities – Green, Green, Green program with a funding allocation of P74 million for 2018.

The City Government architectural team is currently finalizing the project brief and documentation to pave way for the downloading of the funds and the consequent execution of the project.

Mayor Beng Climaco on Wednesday met with the architectural team composed of Architects Rizamay Basing and Rodel Falcasantos together with City Engineer Chris Navarro for a briefing and update on the proposal.

Originally, the architectural team proposed the improvement of 3 key areas – heritage city zone, ecocity zone and the waterfront city zone for consideration in the DBM’s Green, Green, Green Program for the development and improvement of public open spaces.

The DBM eventually approved the waterfront redevelopment which will cover the R.T. Lim Boulevard baywalk to the Paseo del Mar area. The project will include the reclamation of additional area in the boulevard.

The Green, Green, Green Program is a P2.5 B assistance program that aims to create more “breathing spaces” in the country’s 145 cities. It is a parallel endeavor of the Duterte administration’s massive national infrastructure development program, “Build, Build, Build”. Implementation period is from 2018-2022.

The program intends to make cities more sustainable and livable with greening stimuli by developing, improving, and rehabilitating public open spaces.

The program identifies parks, plazas, waterfronts, and streets as public open spaces. (Sheila Covarrubias)
