Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol has attributed the acute rice shortage in Zamboanga City  to successful anti-smuggling operations by the government in the region.

Piñol, who arrived in Zamboanga City earlier this week, personally visited a warehouse along Veterans Avenue where he found only four sacks of rice remaining inside.

“Actually sa Zamboanga lang. Dito lang ito nangyari na nagkaipitan ng rice stocks. (Actually this only happened in Zamboanga. This is the only place where rice stocks have been reduced.)  Funny, that we have to admit this, but the successful campaign against rice smuggling was one reason behind the shortage of rice supply in Zamboanga City,” Piñol said.

The agriculture secretary said that imported rice was supposed to come in during the lean months.

Speculators, however, took advantage of the delayed importation of NFA rice and manipulated the price of commercial rice which increased to a point where people were already complaining.

Meanwhile, Piñol congratulated law enforcement agencies such as the Philippine Navy (PN), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Bureau of Customs (BOC), and others which led to the reduction in the volume of smuggled rice entering Zamboanga Peninsula. (RGAAGo)
