A former Army man who went on absence without leave (AWOL)  was arrested by police in Barangay Malagutay last Thursday for alleged gun smuggling.

Chief Insp. Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-9 information officer, identified the suspect as Ricardo Guillen y Arsenal , 41 years old, and a resident of Upper Calarian.

Guillen, who was also identified as an AWOL member of the Philippine Army, was arrested during an entrapment operation in Barangay Malagutay at around 4 p. m. by men of the Sta. Maria Police Station led by Chief Insp. Arlan Delumpines with soldiers of Task Force Zamboanga.

Delumpines said that Guillen was collared during an entrapment operation after he agreed to sell gun parts to a police undercover.

When Guillen and the police undercover met, the latter handed him the P10,000 marked money in exchange for gun parts and ammunition.

At this point, lawmen held him and placed him under arrest.

Policemen recovered from his possession the marked money, two upper receivers with bolt for M-16 rifle, M-4 replica rifle and sixteen 5.56 caliber live ammunition.

The suspect was detained at the Sta. Maria Police Station for appropriate filing of charges in court.  (Dan Toribio)
