Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol has bared a recent warning by President Rodrigo Duterte that rice hoarders will be treated like drug dealers.

“It’s going to be a very risky business for these people,” Piñol said during his recent visit to Zamboanga City.

Piñol made the statement amid a reported panic buying of rice in some of the city’s public markets due to what was reported as a rice shortage in Zamboanga City.

Recall that the Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) suggested to impose a  ceiling on the price of rice which is said to have already reached more than P60 per kilogram.

The LPCC, headed by Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar, will be submitting the draft of the price ceiling for the approval of President Duterte.

The draft contains the recommended price of rice to be pegged at P45 per kilo for the succeeding three months.

The LPCC also recommended to the National Food Authority (NFA) to augment the supply of rice in Zamboanga City.

If the price ceiling is violated, penalties range from P1,000 to P300,000 and 1 year up to 10 years imprisonment. (RGAAGo)
