Ateneo gives out Special Awards, marks anniversary as university The Ateneo de Zamboanga University, on the occasion of its 17th year as a full-fledged University, is holding the Ateneo Special Awards Convocation on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at its Salvador Campus in La Purisima St. this city.

AdZU President Fr. Karel San Juan, SJ, announced that this year’s recipients are GENERAL CARLITO G GALVEZ JR, Chief of Staff, Armed Forces of the Philippines, who will be given the ATENEO PEACE AWARD; BRO CARLITO MORANTE GASPAR, CSsR, of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer,who will receive the PRO DEO ET PATRIA AWARD; and Zamboangueño writer and journalist ANTONIO MA ONRUBIA NIEVA, who will be honored post humously with the MAYOR CESAR C CLIMACO AWARD.

The Ateneo Peace Award is bestowed on Gen Galvez for his achievements as a peace-oriented leader in the military; his leadership role during the Marawi Siege as Commanding General of the Western Mindanao Command, his contribution to the peace process as Deputy Commander for the Peace Process of the Western Mindanao Command, and as Chair of the Coordinating Committee on Cessation of Hostilities.

Bro Karl Gasparwill be presentedthe PRO DEO ET PATRIA AWARD for his achievements as a scholar, community development worker, theologian, and friend-advocate of the indigenous peoples, faith organizations, the Church, and the poor, especially of Mindanao.

The  MAYOR CESAR C CLIMACO  AWARD is conferred on the late Antonio Nieva,for his critical leadership role as founder of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, and his contribution as a journalist to the struggle to restore Press Freedom during a most turbulent time in Philippine history.

Conducting the awards ceremony on August 21 is auspicious and fitting for AdZU. Not only is the Ateneo celebrating its anniversary as a university, it also commemoratesthe death of Ninoy Aquino, for his heroism in defense of Philippine democracy. (University Communications Office)
