Customs police together with Coast Guard personnel apprehended a fast craft loaded with 1,000 sacks of sugar within the vicinity of Pilas Island last Sunday.

Customs police Sp/Lt. Filomeno Salazar said that prior to the incident, they received information that a fast craft, the M/B Fatima Shakira, is transporting around 1,500 sacks of sugar within the vicinity of Pilas Island.

The cargo is reportedly bound for Zamboanga City.

Salazar coordinated with Zamboanga Coast Guard Station commander Lt. Cmdr. Noriel Ramos for assistance.

The Coast Guard proceeded to the area which resulted to the apprehension of the vessel.

Salazar identified the fast craft skipper as a certain Alkaiser Jaafar, of legal age and a resident of Jolo, Sulu.

No pertinent documents were presented to the Coast Guard to support the shipment.

In an interview with Jaafar, he said that the cargo, which came from Malaysia, was owned by a certain Haji Al of Jolo.

Haji Al reportedly instructed the captain to ship the sugar to an area in Upper Calarian, Zamboanga City.

Jaafar also said that he doesn’t know that the shipment is illegal.

BOC personnel are making an inventory of the smuggled sugar while the fast craft was moored at the Zamboanga port in front of the Customs office.  (Remus Ong)
