The Zamboanga City Blood Council together with the Rotary Club and the  local government awarded the top 10 barangays which initiated the highest number of mobile blood donations from July 2017 to July 2018.

The top ten barangays and their corresponding blood donations are as follows: Tetuan, 801 units of blood; Pasonanca, 566; Baliwasan, 370; Sta. Maria,282; Guiwan 218; Labuan, 214; Ayala, 189; Mercedes, 180; Calarian, 166; and Tulungatung, 165.

These barangays received a certificate of recognition received by their respective barangay captains from Rotary Club President Dr. Justin Paber and OIC City Health Office Dulce Miravite.

Marie Christin Lim, Zamboanga City Blood Council Program Coordinator, identified the two blood facilities which tallied the blood donations as Zamboanga City Medical Center and Philippine Red Cross.

The award aims to give due recognition to the untiring efforts of barangay captains in helping alleviate the plight of their constituents in the area of health. This is the first time for the council to give such awards together with the Rotary Club of Zamboanga.

This year, only 33 of the 98 barangays are supportive of the Zamboanga City Blood Council barangay blood donation efforts.

This activity is also aimed towards encouraging and motivating the barangays which are not yet conducting Mobile Blood Donations.

The Zamboanga City Blood Council chaired by Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco was created by virtue of City Ordinance 336, an enabling ordinance establishing the city/barangay blood councils and prescribing the rules and regulations for its effective implementation in the city of Zamboanga. The ordinance was enacted last July 24, 2008 and approved August 8, 2008.

Meanwhile, Lim is encouraging other barangays to follow the footsteps of these top ten barangays as blood is important and it is being used by cancer patients, dialysis patients, and others.   (RGAAGo)
