A member of the Abu Sayyaf group was killed while twenty (20) soldiers were wounded during a fierce firefight in Barangay Langhub, Patikul Municipality in Sulu province last Thursday.

A Western Mindanao Command  (WesMinCom) report said that operating troops of the  Army’s 41st Infantry Battalion encountered forty members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) at around 9:30 a.m. last Thursday in Barangay Langhub.

The bandits were followers of Abu Sayyaf sub-leaders Idang Susukan and Ben Tattoo.

A firefight followed, killing Alpata Abdurasa.

Of the twenty soldiers who were wounded, eighteen members sustained slight shrapnel wounds from an M203 grenade launcher.  Two others suffered gunshot wounds.

Troops believe that there are more ASG members who were injured based on the number of bodies being dragged by the bandits.

Enemies scampered off to different directions after the gunbattle.

Western Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Arnel Dela Vega commended the troops for their “untiring dedication to their duties” and assured troops of proper medical treatment for their injured comrades.  (Remus Ong)
