Coast Guard intercepts 22,000 sacks of smuggled rice aboard 2 vessels PDF Print E-mail

Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District SouthWestern Mindanao under Captain Joseph Coyme apprehended over the weekend some 22,000 sacks of imported rice on board two separate vessels off the high seas of Southern Philippines.

PCG Zamboanga Station chief Noriel Ramos said that the PCG Zamboanga Station together with their MRRV 4408 (BRP Cape San Agustin) were conducting seaborne patrols on the vicinity of Tamuk Island, Basilan Province when they intercepted two vessels loaded with smuggled rice namely; M/L OVERSEAS which is skippered by a certain Berdasher Usman and owned by Hadji Sukarno Usman with business address in Lamion,Bongao,Tawi-Tawi.

The other vessel is named M/L NADEEPA, skippered by Hayatulla Dahim and operated by Hadja Nancy Aharadji with business address in Sta. Catalina, Zamboanga City.

Ramos said that during their investigation on the crew on board, accordingly, the said vessels came from Malaysia and were on their way to Maluso, Basilan when intercepted by their personnel.

The official said that upon inspection, M/L OVERSEAS was found out to be carrying some 10,000 sacks of (25) kilos glutinous rice, 1,000 carton of Maggi Kari and refined sugar but without any pertinent importation documents.

Meanwhile, upon similar inspection also to the other ship M/L NADEEPA, it was discovered by the Coast Guard operatives that it was carrying some 12,000 sacks of (25) kilos glutinous smuggled rice but still without pertinent documents.

Ramos said that upon apprehension, his command immediately coordinated with operatives of the Bureau of Customs led by Atty Lyceo Martinez for the proper disposition of the seized contraband.

The two vessels were escorted by PCG operatives to the City of Zamboanga in coordination with BOC personnel for proper accounting procedure.

No less than Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña will be arriving here in Zamboanga City today to officially receive from the custody of the PCG the confiscated smuggled rice during a formal turn over ceremony in the afternoon.- (Bhong Simbajon/RMN News)
