The Philippine Coast Guard has turned over 22,000 sacks of smuggled rice from Malaysia during a simple ceremony yesterday.

The turnover receipt was signed by Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña.

Recall that Zamboanga Coast Guard personnel were conducting their seaborne patrol within the vicinity of Tamuk Island in Basilan province when they intercepted two cargo vessels loaded with smuggled rice.

The two vessels were identified as the ML Overseas, a vessel with business address in Lamion, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi and the M/L Nadeepa whose owner is reportedly from Sta. Catalina, Zamboanga City.

Both vessels were carrying 22,000 sacks of rice from Malaysia to Maluso in Basilan when they were apprehended.

The vessels were seized  by the Coast Guard after its officers and crew failed to present documents to support the rice importation.  (Ely Dumaboc)
