The City Council has commended gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, Felix Marcial and other Zamboangueño athletes for their excellent performance during the 18th Asian Games.

District 1 Councilor Elbert Atilano, author of the resolution, said that Diaz displayed briliance and prowess during the games, qualities which made her win the country’s first gold medal in the Women’s 53-kilogram weightlifting event.

Hidilyn Francisco Diaz, a Zamboangueña and a resident of Barangay Mampang, is part of the Philippine Weightlifting Team to the 18th Asian Games and a multi-awarded athlete who won medals in previous international and national weightlifting competitions.

Diaz’s coaches are Antonio Agustin Jr., Alvin Delos Santos and Gregorio Colonia.

In boxing, 22-year-old Zamboangueño Eumir Felix Marcial bagged the bronze medal in the Men’s middleweight 75 -kilogram category with coach Ambrocio Maquilan.

Other Zamboangueño athletes who were commended include Jefferson Rhey Abilay Loon who won the bronze medal in the Men’s Class D, 60-65 kilogram Tanding Division in Pencak Silat with coach Rommel Bernardo; Sharief Afif in Karatedo with coach Otto Antao Sr; and in Wushu, Clemente Tabugara with coach Oscar Cabig.

“These Zamboangueño athletes brought honor and pride to the city and our country, thus worthy of recognition and emulation,” Atilano said.  (Monch Follosco)
